I think it may or may not true, but still it is widely practice in some parts of our region.
In past there are very few education centers and it was widely believe that education is unnecessary for girls, it is for boys, because they have to earn money to run the house, Women to work at home. There is change in this thinking but not much.
In past marriage was even 10-12years, Mirza Ghalib and his wife was married at the age of almost 12 years , they remains united till death. But the main issue is the age difference, which I think could not resolve. Still in rural society, elderly men marry with a girl of his daughter age. Men are power full than women, so they take the advantage.
In old days widows are forced to perform SATI, and it was suppose to be a part of Hindu religion, women are not allowed to remarry and forced to live as dead women, and it is called a so-called pious life. But now the environment is changed significantly.
The use of veil or the PURDAH system in India is not changed altogether, still wide spread Muslim women.
A girl or a woman of any age, sexual relationship is always a trauma when she is not ready and tantamount to be raped. Yes it is 100% true” Normal marital sexual relations for women [and girls] at that time often resulted in feelings of being raped. And they were supposed to live under these inhuman conditions for the sake of some implicit false moral code”.
But it is widely practice, as it is still widely believe that sex is for men, and women is child producing machine, which have no sexual feelings.
Rebati: A voyage to women’s inner core is appeared to be the achievements for selected women, like Ismat Cughtai, Kamla Das, Amrita Pritam who were outspoken in expressing their views, lead a life which they consider best. But each woman has a favorable back ground. Ismat belong to educated family, his elder brother AZEEM BAIG CHUGHTAI, help her at every walk of life and find enough courage to write “LIHAF”. Similarly is the case for other women, Kamla Das, Amrita Pritam. But you (Dr. Sarojini Sahoo) should include yourself in brave women, you have written Dark Abode, an email based love story. Shafiq a Pakistani writes email to kuki Hindustani “You are a fairy without wings”. And as the love progresses, he start sending his sexual ideas in words, later in the form of nude drawings which he attached in every email. These nude drawings are the important part of the novel “Dark abode”, and appear in every chapter of the book.
Illicit relation is another matter, if a woman is raped, his life is ended, she is considered as a second hand woman, and no one accepts her.
If we analyze the general people, they are influence deeply by religion. In Islam, Christianity, Judaism, one of the few worst sin is considered to be illicit sex relation. If a man and woman found guilty to have sex relation without marriage, there is severe punishment. AS we observe, the law is for weaker person, and powerful person is above the law. So this is applied to weaker person, the women, and consequently the women virginity is suppose to be most important thing.
If we read Ramayana, the holy book of Hinduism, the whole book is full of braveness, great Endeavour, truthfulness, of Ram. ALLAMA IQBAL says
हॆ राम के वजूद पर हिनदोसतान को नाज़
ऎहले नज़र समझते हॆं इस को इमामे हिन्द
But last few pages are really anticlimax, when Ram refuses to accept seeta, as she remain in captivity of raven, AGNI DAIVTA came to rescue her and prove her PAKDAMNEE.
So we can imagine how important we considered so called virginity of a women, from the ancient time, it is only for women not for men. Once it was considered very important in every part of the world, but with the passage of time, little change in our region, But in west virginity is written in books only, in practice it is considered merely a hole in the women’s body.Kalimullahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06280814705278142487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34294300.post-41085191611854139102010-02-09T07:17:28.958-08:002010-02-09T07:17:28.958-08:00The story is as simple:

As you have emphasised, it was a shocking reality in the 19th century(Tagore has portrayed this evil pracitce in many of his short stories),and it continues in some parts of the country even in the 21st century. It is the writers' duty to fight against it using their powerful weapon of pen. And you have been exactly doing it!Prof. K. V. My search into the roots of this thought took me glimpse into earlier writings such as the Old Testament, from where Quoran takes its inspiration and references.Below is small story from the old testament. You know the Old Testament is regarded as Gospel, God's word, even today by the world's three religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Genesis 16:2 : Sarah gave permission to her husband Abraham to engage in sexual intercourse with her maid, Hagar: "Sarai said unto Abram...I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her." Presumably this was done without the consent of Hagar, who had such a low status in the society of the day that she was required to submit to multiple rapes at her owner's command.
Genesis 19:8: The men of Sodom gathered around Lot's house, and asked that he bring his two guests out so that the men can "know" them. This is frequently interpreted as a desire to gang rape the visitors, although other interpretations are possible. Lot offers his two virgin daughters to be raped instead: He is recorded as saying: "I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes." Yet, even after this despicable act, Lot is still regarded as an honorable man, worth saving from the destruction of the city. Allowing one's daughters to be sexually assaulted by multiple rapists appears to be treated as a minor transgression, because of the low status of the young women. More details on Genesis 19.

Avtarjeet Dhanjal
www.haraf.comAvtarjeethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12030727013964489163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34294300.post-45754001561913853982010-02-05T11:43:55.876-08:002010-02-05T11:43:55.876-08:00I appreciate your work.
